The majority of the projects developed on the marine environment need the preparation of a detailed cartography to optimally plan the various interventions.
Submarime Cartography is based on the use of survey techniques like side scan sonar to obtain a georeferenced record of the seabed where the bionomics units can be identified. Also used to identify subsea construction elements ( pipes, harbour installations, fish farms etc ) and objects.
We also offer the service to carry out high precision bathymetries which is very much related with the marine construction activities.
One of the main activities developed by the Marine Biology Department is to produce highly accurate bathymetries and topographic surveys.
The bathymetries are very close linked with the development of marine projects and control of marine construction activities.
In the other hand the correct positioning of marine navigation aids, fish farms, beacons etc is a fundamental need. The various ellipsoids used historically for the production of cartography an objects positioning at sea together with the legislation changes standardizing new ones ( ERTS89 ), can sometimes produce confusion and requires adequate knowledge in geodesy.
The Marine Biology Department carry out numerous positioning activities in support of various marine projects ( artificial reefs, acuiculture installations, harbour Works etc) and uses for that purpose differential GPS systems (dGPS ), kinematic positioning systems ( RTK ) and classic topography equipment.
Many of the activities developed by our team of experts fall within the Environmental Monitoring field. Among other services we offer:
- Environmental Monitoring program design according to the contents of the Environmental Impact Declaration.
- Sampling campaigns to meassure the criteria stablished on the Environmental Monitoring Program.
- Comprehensive Studies of the Marine Environment to stablish initial conditions of the work.
- Control and follow up of sensitive communities.
One of the most important services offered to our clients is the Company capability to fully manage and supervise the dredging projects.
This process includes:
- Permits paperwork management.
- Materials to be dredge characterization study
- Dredging techniques suitability study
- Dredging materials management alternatives study and environmental monitoring.
It´s of public domain and easy to observe the deterioration of the coast line during the last few years. This fact has triggered a higher level of awareness on the population regarding the activities that can potentially generate impact.
MSM has done Environmental Impact Studies on a wide variety of projects such as outfall pipes installation, construction of marinas, rock dumping, building construction on protected areas, etc .
For this kind of projects MSM has a well integrated multidisciplinary team as well as the necessary equipment: Side Scan Sonar, hydrographic echo sounders, underwater cameras, ROV´s, sound gauges, High Volume Sensors etc.
Fisheries Studies are approached in different ways like populations dynamics, activity description and fishing techniques, satellite imagery analysis, acoustics, embarkation on board fishing boats, interviews to parties involved, catch evaluation and left overs analysis, etc.
Our experience took us to participate in European Projects (The Fisheries in Catalonia and Valencia, MEDISME, DESCARTES, RESPONSE and COMSOM) in cooperation with prestigious research centres like CIBM from Pisa (Italy), Bangor (Wales) School of Science, Institute AWI of Polar Science from Bremerhaven (Germany), IEO from Murcia (Spain) and Instituto de Ciencias del Mar of CSIC from Barcelona (Spain).

The Marine Biology Department has been very active in promoting Environmental Education activities as well as publishing a good number of Environment interpretation guides.
Among the most recent ones we can highlight: “Malacology Colection of Alicante Province”, “ Dichotomycal Guide of Malacologycal Species Identification”,” Alicante Province marine fauna and flora identification guide ”, provincial diving guide “ Undersea Paths ”, Alicante Province beach catalogue “Sand Paths”, etc.
Within the scope of Environmental Education and Nature Understanding our department is executing numerous projects like “ Alicante Province Environment Volunteers “ and the project “ Green Tents on the beaches of Alicante Province”.
Mediterráneo Servicios Marinos, has been part and now is developing several research projects in the areas of marine biotechnology, oceanography, genetic and pharmacological among others.
The following projects can be highlighted:
- Extraction of active compounds from marine origin species (2004- 2007).
- Metagenomic libraries of microorganisms associated with marine invertebrates .
- Response of benthonic communities and sediments to different trawling fishing regimes on European Coastal Waters (RESPONSE).
- Capture and captivity feasibility research of the schrimp Plesionika edwardsii.
- Identification of new marine origin natural compounds with potential therapeutic and industrial application.(2007-2010).
These projects have been financially supported by the following public institutions.
